Crafting the Ideal Lab Coat
A Decade of Innovation, Trusted by 100,000+ Science Students
When I was in college as a pre dental student in 2006, a lab coat was just a lab coat.
As a human biology major at the University of California San Diego, I spent a lot of time wearing these things. The lab coats we had access to were white, buttoned down the front, had a chest pocket and a couple lower front pockets — you’ve seen them.
But what you might not know if you haven’t worn a lot of them is they’re also hot, heavy, sometimes dangerously baggy, the pockets had no tool holder and cell phones were hard to access through them.
During my time at UC San Diego, designing a safer, more comfortable and stylish lab coat became my obsession.
Lab coats have been basically the same since the early 1900s, but I noticed that with a few tweaks, the lab coats we wore at the labs could not only be more comfortable and stylish, they could prevent mistakes and maybe even accidents.
For instance, our lab class only had one centrifuge, and while we waited in line to use it, we students dropped our numbered closed test tubes into the lab coat’s bottom front pockets. This meant we had to fish them back out again and put them back in order before we could use the centrifuge. This led to errors if we weren’t paying close attention. Another example was how baggy these lab coats were. I remember having to carefully reach over the lab bench to make sure I don’t knock my experiment over. Thus slowing me down.
So, driven by frustration and curiosity, I polled my classmates and designed a lab coat that remedied some of the more annoying design aspects, like:
– overall fit
– the lack of tool holders
– badly situated pockets lack of pockets
– spots to organize things like pipets, rulers, pens, and even closed test tubes.
In 2007, I mocked up my first lab coat and was pleasantly surprised when it was adopted by colleges and universities across the country. Over the course of a decade, I gathered feedback from thousands of students who wore my lab coats, and am pretty confident that we’ve come up with a line of perfect lab coats.
Although the coats have evolved over time, different university partners prefer specific versions, so I made every iteration I’ve ever offered available.
Let me know what you think!
Enjoy,
Jaysond
